…you can’t find a bottle in your collection.

Haha, hilarious. You will need to catalogue your fragrances.
Right now they are all jumbled up in their cabinets and I think you may be right!
WHAT !!!! How large exactly is your collection? I have always had an exorbitant number of empties but my full bottles never exceeded more than 10 because I forced myself to be disciplined and not buy a new FB until I finished an old one (although now that there are four “nuts” in the house so we probably have around 40 or so)
I don’t think it is THAT big, and I know there will be plenty of rich perfumistas with far more impressive collections, but I literally had no idea where to start yesterday when trying to find a perfume by Chopard – a full bottle. So I just gave up.
Was it the Casmir bottle? Unfortunately I have this bad habit of gifting things away or allowing others to “borrow” (but never return!) many of my FBs and samples. However, I have recently adopted a practice of decanting a small sample before giving away so that at least I can sniff the vial if I want to recollect the scent.
You are way too benevolent, but I am no stinge myself and have given away LOADS over the years…
The Casmir was there, sweet and stinking for my reappraisal.
Neil, you should really post a pic or two or your collection. What are you looking for, by the way?
I was looking for Chopard Casmir because I thought I might like to review it for the final vanilla installment over at Olfactoria….
I would post some pictures, but there are several reasons why I cannot.
Firstly, the room is veiled in darkness because I have turned it into a Bedouin style tent with thick blankets covering every wall (poor Duncan! He has to put up with my deep, draught-phobia: but Japanese houses are so badly insulated that I am just dying at night and WILL sleep in a warm nest; it would look shit photographed with a flash, so it will have to wait until Spring:
also, D always makes me polish and dust the bottles when friends come round; right now they are in a dreadful state of Miss Haversham dereliction. At some point I might do a piece on the collection though…
I’ve lost count. Between full bottles and minis (not counting the little vial samples), I have nearly (but possibly more), 250. I need perfume rehab (lol).
So do I. And I was just gazing into the perfume cabinets and wondering if I have as many as you do. I don’t think so, but I can’t rule it out. Somehow at the moment it all just looks too daunting. Things aren’t even placed vertically sometimes; just lobbed in horizontally, or even upside down. Despite my great passion, I am also one of the laziest and messiest people in the world (this is indisputable), and it suren’t ain’t being curated properly, this collection: I am no Chandler Burr!
…and it’s nearly Midnight but you defy pumpkin-transformation odds and keep looking until you find it at 5am? Hurray! If it helps, pray to St Anthony – always works for me. Actually, is there a patron saint of perfumes?
If there isn’t, let’s just erect a shrine to Jacques Guerlain.
In the meantime, I found my bottle of sultry Casmir by Chopard and it is more phlangey and animalic than I remembered it. You have to actually spray on and stick your nose in sometimes to refresh your olfactive memory.
Dude it’s hiding in your Vanilla section.
If only there was one! If only there was some sense of order……..
Or…. when you can’t remember what you have. I hardly ever have a problem with what I’m gonna wear (clothes) when going out but need to think for a while which fragrance to put on. And sometimes I need to do the revision or check my list. Plus I never keep them in one place, in case my boyfriend or anyone noticed my little collection which is just over 20 bottles. But for regular human being it’s still massive number.
20 bottles IS massive for a non-perfumist, for the average person who probably didn’t even choose the perfume themselves and sprays it on unconsciously as deodorant….
As for clothes, I am real bloke in that regard, I wear simple things, and am very boring. I never have conundrums about what clothes to wear because I don’t even have any.
Also, my perfume collection is strangely objective: I have lots of things I would never wear myself, just excellent perfumes that I want to own and smell for their intrinsic beauty, or just a dab on the hand at night…
At the moment I am wearing nothing but vanilla and orientals, day in day out. Come spring things might change, and in summer they most definitely will do, but there aren’t many dilemmas happening.
Occasionally though you have no idea what to wear when you are going out and it feels really crucial…I have good instincts, but then sometimes make mistakes, and regret it and hate how I smell all evening…
Are you absolutely sure you had it?;)
I don’t remember ever not being able to find a bottle. On a couple of occasions I spent 10-15 minutes looking for a small decant. Samples… Yeah, those are slippery bastards. And Idefinitely have more of them than it’s possible to remember where exactly you keep each.
So, did you end up finding it?
Yes. It was staring me right in the face on the second shelf in the end, but I tell you, when I wanted it, I couldn’t
