PERFUMES YOU WISH YOU HAD A NEVER-ENDING SUPPLY OF – vol 1: FLEUR DE WEIL (1995)

Fleur de Weil is a very bright, piquant, gentle yet unassuming little floral bouquet that, according to Parfumo – there is very little information available out there nor bottles available as it was apparently released then immediately withdrawn – contains nothing but notes fleuries.

Thank God. Sometimes I can do without the whole top to bottom gradation shebang, the trudging through the treacle of fake ouds and vanillas and white musks and all the rest of the synthetic horror that clings to your skin like a giant sea snail, unscrubbable;

The beauty of Fleur De Weil, of which I only have a tiny miniature I picked up in some junk shop or other, is that it is so fraiche: a field of flowers with some tints of fruits – roses, marigolds, honeysuckle, orange blossoms all diluted and glassified into the most delicious shampoo sheen; worn with my winter orange lip balm I made myself (70% blood orange; 28% grapefruit; 2% geranium ) as I leave the house on this bright and sunny day I smell spanglingly clean and delightful.

If only there were more of it!

Do you have any of your own unicorns / gone scents / yearnings for silo levels of scented plenitude ?

  1. Aqua Manda! A gorgeous orangey veil that I wore as a teenager sallying forth to hang out at Fanny’s, the coffee bar in Bournemouth that was a hip place to be in the late 60’s. Alas, one can never go back – long since discontinued and I would ne afraid to try a vintage version in case I hated it. I prefer my memories.

    Well….Amouage Homage as it was….I’d love to have both the supply and the funds for it. Bond No9 Fire Island has gone too. Niki de St Phalle and Or Noir by Pascal Morabito, although I do have a supply that may not end before I do. Of course Weil de Weil. From much longer ago, Oriflame….

    Extract of Mysore Sandelwood by Crabwood & Evelyn: the bottle with the red label with an elephant on it. I used to spray it copiously beginning of the 1990‘s. Tempi passati!

    If I’m honest, I’d say something not very original: Guerlain Metalys. I just find it so beautiful and also so “me.” But only have a small decant left at this point, but the prices for a bottle are stratospheric 🙁

  5. Nicky Verfailles Grain de Sables & Choc de Cardin. I have smidges of both but hate wearing them. I’m obviously a 90yo Japanese lady refusing to open her perfumed stash

    Guerlilas, I yearn for it. I have one ounce left. Long discontinued, but truly the most beautiful lilac perfume I have ever smelled, and I’ve smelled lots of them. I also wish for vintage Jolie Madame. I love that one so much! I have a small bottle from the 60’s I was able to get my hands on 10 years ago but it’s almost gone. I think Germaine Cellier was a master perfumer, and should have been more appreciated back in her day; at least she has been recognized for her talent now.

    • I have vintage Jolie Madame – would gladly decant some for you if the postal service here were not not so draconian.

      Guerlilas?! I have never even heard of it. Sounds like a proper unicorn

        Neil, I believe Guerlilas was launched in 1940 but I’m not positive. I bought a decant of it from Surrender to Chance, a very reputable decanting company here in the US that has many vintage fragrances as well current ones. I have bought from them for years. I loved Guerlilas so much that I bought the last remaining stock a few weeks ago. Basenotes states that the top notes are lilac and bergamot, the middle notes are jasmine, heliotrope, lily of the valley and violet and the base notes are deer musk and civet. There’s not much information out there about Guerlilas; I don’t think it was around for very long. I don’t know why, it’s gorgeous, swoon-
        worthy!

        Many thanks for mentioning you wish you could decant some vintage Jolie Madame for me, but having read some of your previous posts about what a nightmare the Japanese postal service is I do understand what an impossible task it would be to send it. A very kind thought on your part, though.
