Actually this is a pretty common sight ( though this man’s shoes were extra fastidiously neat here, which is probably why I felt compelled to take the quick and surreptitious photograph ).
On some commuter lines especially, those that link the heart of Tokyo with residential areas / cities an hour or more away, the thinking seems to be along the lines of look I’ve had a long and exhausting day, I have found my perch, and now I am going to marinate in my own private world until I get home so don’t even THINK about trying to sit next to me
