In Germany, for a full-time employee at 60, one has an holiday entitlement of 30 days per year. And I did not make use of one single of these days in 2023, instead arranging each of my copious holidays with last year’s leave or overtime compensation …! So, as you can see I could theoretically go on a sabbatical which of course I won‘t. Japanese work ethic to the detriment of my health and sanity!
I do wish you would be a little more selfish : you must know deep down not having enough holiday is really unhealthy
Aside from one working day next Friday I am lucky to be off from work until January 9th. I feel guilty, because my full contract J colleagues will be working themselves into the ground during the pre-examination period while I just luxuriate in my hibernation but I have chosen time over money.
I feel exactly the same way! As a fellow teacher, I imagine that you are possibly feeling the extra taxation of having to extend just a little more goodwill than usual (of course there are days which this comes readily — and others where it doesn’t.) Had to cradle a book in my hand yesterday on the bus so that it would fall and wake me up whenever I slumped to avoid missing my stop! It was by Kobo Abe…It turns out existential minimalism can be soporific under the right circumstances…Which seasonal fragrances are you reaching for these days?
Sleeping warrants priority seating, clearly. Poor knackered souls.
Plenty of those in the world this year
True: I feel I could do with a four week break!
At least

You are so absolutely right! What to say?
I certainly am looking forward to your new book! Wishing you a very creative and productive holiday!
Thankyou
Have to deal with some heavy shit first though – this has been really bad year for me and I am really not in the best of places
Exactly. Hang in there (one day to go here…) x
Oh good
Hope you have a blissfully snug hibernation without too much Christmas stress
