FINALLY, SOME OSMANTHUS AT NOSE LEVEL

A perfect flowering tonight – a whole avenue for smell gazing – at its apricot utmost.

Reader, this stuff smells UNBELIEVABLE

Mmm. Would love to experience that. I’ve not liked most of the osmanthus fragrances I’ve tried so far, though admittedly a limited sampling. On way home from a few days in Seville, an olfactory delight for me (a torture for those who don’t like orange blossom, etc). I was in heaven with the incense/blossom combinations and am returning a great deal heavier in both heart and suitcase.

    • How wonderful to hear from you. I have always wanted to go to Seville – did you know we were actually planning on leaving Japan in 2007 or so to go there for a while but then backed down ?

I prefer orange blossom ( which d famously hates ) to kinkokusei but it is a close call. Our tree is a bit withered this year and isn’t putting out much scent but these bushes in Yokohama straight after work were DELIRIOUS

    • Ps they always ruin osmanthus with too much leathery tedium : the absolute is barnyard AF – and so are many of the tributes – even a weird smelly hand cream I tried in Fujisawa the other day – but as you will remember, the living flowers are deranging and celestial

Yes, maybe that’s it; need to smell one that’s unleathery. I have orange blossom in my garden but I think they must be pumping it out of the shops and airport here; it’s everywhere. Will you therefore be unable to visit?? The orange, on the other hand, is not to my liking. But I found a gorgeous narcissus also, and a jasmine. Cheap, and I don’t remember the brand right now…I was also wearing Jasmine Absolue by Rogue, very nice.

Love the photos and wish I could smell it. BTW, you look very handsome in that photo.

  3. I am so jealous!
As for osmanthus in perfumes, I actually prefer a more leathery direction – it’s the watery and freesia interpretation that puts me off so many. Or else too much ethyl maltol or something…
