HA ! I THINK THE PERFUME MYSTERY MAY HAVE BEEN RESOLVED

At my first ever Thanksgiving party in Kawasaki – I am wearing Boucheron Jaipur – D is wearing Electimuss Puritas – a soft lingering frankincense – and someone I actually KNOW – Atsushi – has just walked in wearing THE SCENT.

It smells good on him. Less searing. Pretty sure it is it though.

And the perfume in question ….

Sorry to disappoint those who were expecting something expensive and nichey but my nose tells me this is the one.

Zara via Jo Malone Elegantly Tokyo.

Funny that something prescriptively ‘Tokyoesque’ is actually worn here..

Indeed! Well, it is always good to know what not to wear.
Funny, that there is such a difference in skin and senses!
Anyway, keep your nose up high.

  2. Now I must go back and reread your original description of the fragrance, cross-referenced with the descriptions on perfume websites. Hmmm. By the way, Jaipur sounds lovely for Thanksgiving… It often makes me think of some kind of silky, plush cardamom pudding. I gifted my bottle to my daughter (21), as there is something in it I’m mildly allergic to, and it smells wonderful on her. She can be a bit of a sillage queen, and the wake of Jaipur is one of the nicest I know — draping and tactile.

Weirdly, I’ve been waking up each morning to an olfactory mirage of a honey accord (like the one in Giorgio Beverly Hills for Men, or the vaguely urinous, syrupy cyclamen in Jules) in my nostrils — a mystery of my own but a pleasant one.

By the way, I think if you’re going to be oldest, you might as well be boldest. I’m sure your youthful friends expected a little entertainment from the most august of their guests.

    • Jaipur smelled perfect yesterday – I adore your description of it here.

I agree the notes of Tokyo – lily, jasmine , ‘akigalawood’ don’t add up but they capture the fresh living tundra I was talking about and with a ton of calone you can imagine the wood becoming peppery.

I knew it couldn’t be the expensive niche people were talking about because that couldn’t become so au courant just financially for people.

But then Jo Malone lifts up the Zara aspect and makes it above lower mainstream here as it is actually not that cheap and the bottle is kind of groovy.

Re age : yes, I think it is good to have different age groups to your own sometimes – will be hanging out with a ten year older than me crowd next week. I have become socially avoidant this year and ever more neurotic – so trying to see people more.

We DIDN’T need to take that bottle of rum though

Well, I can’t say I’m not a little let down as I’m one of the ones who was hoping it would be an extremely obscure and niche fragrance, but how wonderful it is to have the mystery solved! It was fun trying to suss out what it could possibly be.
