    I went to Japan once on business and my then-boss, who is Syrian, pointed out several similarities, such as the style and shape of tiles on sidewalks. These conversations are always interesting to me.

      Me too – fantastic to know that my strange juxtaposition last night when I got home – this is the view from our front gate now that the landlord has cut down the wisteria tree that was strangling the electric cables and the osmanthus – was not entirely unfounded in reality. Last night I definitely saw something middle-eastern

        That particular trip was to Hiroshima and then a day or so in Tokyo. I enjoyed Japan very much – the cleanliness, the food, the extra thoughtful touch on everything (beautiful packaging, a setting on public toilets to play musical notes to mask your own noise…) I’ve also been in Nagaoka and Niigata to visit friends on a different trip, and experienced the most fantastic matsuri festival in Nagaoka – 2 hours of fireworks! And the water quality was so good there; the rice grown in Niigata was the best I’ve ever tasted.

        A glowing review -I’m glad you liked it. I sometimes wish I made more energy to see specific festivals in different parts of the country because I know many are supposed to be amazing. The crowds deter me though ..
